From Wool to Masterpiece
Five meticulous stages, each performed entirely by hand
The foundation of every great carpet is the wool. We source premium Ghazni wool from highland Afghan sheep — a breed prized for centuries for its durability, natural luster, and ability to hold rich, lasting color. The wool is sorted by hand, washed, and carded to remove impurities before being spun into yarn.
Our dyes are 100% natural, derived from plants including madder root (reds), indigo (blues), walnut hulls (browns), pomegranate peel (yellows), and reseda (greens). The wool is dyed in small batches using recipes passed down through generations. The dyeing process can take several days, as the wool is soaked, heated, and cooled to achieve the perfect shade. Natural dyes age beautifully, developing a rich patina over decades.
This is where the magic happens. Our artisans weave on traditional wooden looms, tying each knot by hand following a pattern chart. An experienced weaver can tie 10,000 to 15,000 knots per day. A 6×9 foot carpet with a medium knot density can take 3–6 months to complete. Higher knot counts mean finer detail — and longer production time. Every knot is a deliberate act of skill and patience.
Once weaving is complete, the carpet is carefully removed from the loom and washed in natural spring water. This removes loose fibers, excess dye, and dust, while also softening the wool and enhancing the colors. The carpet is then laid flat in the sun to dry — a process that can take several days and allows the natural colors to settle into their final, rich tones.
The final stage is where quality is ensured. Edges are hand-bound to prevent unraveling. The pile is trimmed and leveled to achieve a uniform surface. The carpet is then stretched and inspected under natural light — checking for consistency, color accuracy, and structural integrity. Only carpets that pass our rigorous inspection leave the workshop. Every carpet is a one-of-a-kind piece, signed by the artisan who wove it.
